KIBBUTZ BEIT HAEMEK, Israel , June 2015 – A serum-free, xeno-free, culture system for the expansion and differentiation of clinical grade human mesenchymal stem cells will be demonstrated by Biological Industries in an ‘innovation showcase’ at an International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR) Annual Meeting in Stockholm, Sweden, from June 24-27.
Biological Industries VP for Scientific Affairs, David Fiorentini, who will present the showcase, said: “This is an innovative technology which providrd the ability to efficiently differentiate hMSC from various sources into adipocytes, chondrocytes and osteoblasts.”
Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) are multipotent adult stem cells that can be isolated from variety of human tissues such as bone marrow, adipose, placenta, cord blood and Wharton jelly. hMSC have the ability to differentiate into bone, cartilage and fat cells and are the subject of many clinical trials for a range of regenerative and inflammatory diseases.
In most clinical applications hMSC are expanded in vitro before use. The quality of the culture media and auxiliary solutions is particularly crucial with regard to therapeutic applications, since hMSC properties can be significantly affected by medium components and culture conditions.
The showcase will present the development of the innovative xeno-free culture system, comprising of MSC NutriStem® XF culture medium and the required auxiliary solutions to support isolation, expansion and cryopreservation of clinical grade hMSC. In addition, a novel serum-free, xeno-free differentiation media that efficiently generate mature adipocytes, osteoblasts and chondrocytes using hMSC from variety of sources will be demonstrated.
A second part of the showcase, presented by Dr. Steve Oh, Director Stem Cell Bioprocessing, BIP Programme Director & Senior Principal Scientist from the Bioprocessing Technology Institute (BTI) in Singapore, will be a lecture on issues related to microcarrier vs. monolayer serum-free media for human mesenchymal stem cells.
The ISSCR is the premier international society for stem cell science and its annual meeting provides an opportunity for scientists, clinicians, educators and industry professionals to share new data, learn from peers, and discover global advances within the stem cell field. The meeting attracts approximately 3000 professionals from 55 countries.
